Depression of liver catalase by various agents.

چکیده

I t is now a well established fact tha t liver catalase activity is diminished in tumor-bearing hosts which carry any one of a variety of types of cancer. Since the tumor may be located at a distance from the liver, the effect is systemic (2, 3, 9, 13, 19, 20, 24). Nakahara and Fukuoka (26, 27) have reported tha t the agent responsible for the depression of liver catalase is found abundantly in cancerous tissues and not in normal tissues in a significant amount. This agent is designated toxohormone, and it contains specific amino acids (17). The injection of tumor fractions into normal mice is followed by a diminution in liver catalase activity (18), and crystalline catalase activity in vitro is depressed when a tumor Koehsafl is incubated with the enzyme (21). In vitro depressions of crystalline catalase activity have been observed following incubation with boiled extracts from normal tissues (14) and ovomucoid (1). That tumor tissues are not the only tissues capable of depressing catalase activity in vivo was reported by Day et al. (12). Homogenates of lyophilized spleen taken from noncancerous mice were shown to cause a lowering of liver catalase activity when injected into normal mice. Also, it has been reported tha t autolyzed liver homogenates contain a factor which depresses liver catalase activity (29). Other investigators have not assigned a significant role to normal tissue factors regarding their capability to alter catalase activity of the liver (2, 18, 24, 27). However, other agents have been found to exert an effect on this liver enzyme. Some of these agents include dietary alterations (6, 9, 11, 28), leprosy bacteria (18), chemical agents (7, 22, 29), and hormonal influences (4, 5, 10, 11).

Cancer and human liver catalase.

Data presented in the present paper indicate that human liver catalase depression is related to weight loss. A statistical study was first made to determine the catalase activity in correlation of the iodotitrimetric and spectrophotometric methods for biopsy and autopsy samples from cancer and cancer-free patients. Cancer patients had a 2~ per cent lower liver catalase activity than cancer-free...

Negative regulation of catalase gene expression in hepatoma cells.

For an understanding of the molecular basis of the marked decrease in catalase activity of various tumor cells, expression of the catalase gene was studied in rat and human hepatoma cell lines and in rat liver, which was used as a control with high activity. RNA blot hybridization profiles and run-on assays indicated that the decrease in catalase activity was due to depression of catalase gene ...

Neurobehavioral Effects of Prolonged Exposure to Solid Air Freshener in Mice

Background: Air fresheners are products with fragrances used to mask unpleasant odor in the environment. However, air fresheners contain diverse chemical substances that pose health challenges to the users; hence are of public health significance. Although previous studies have shown that air fresheners affect the lungs, liver and reproductive organs, the neurobehavioral effects of these agent...

In vitro Studying of Deferasirox Side effects on the Structure and the Function of Bovine Liver Catalase

Background & Objective: Oral chelators such as deferasirox are used to treat iron overload caused by blood transfusion. Considering the significant role of liver in detoxification and drug metabolism as well as the importance of catalase as a key enzyme in detoxification, this study was performed to evaluate the effect of deferasirox, which is an iron chelator on the structure and the synt...

Studies on the cachexia of tumor-bearing animals. II. Catalase activity in the tissues of hepatoma-bearing animals.

Several rat and mouse hepatomas and the liver and kidneys of the host animals were assayed for catalase activity. Little or no activity could be demonstrated in the subcutaneously transplanted Novikoff hepatoma, Hepatoma LC18, and Hepatoma 3683 of rats, and in a number of transplanted hepatomas of mice and hamsters. A relatively high activity was found, however, in the transplanted Hepatoma 512...
